As-salam-alaikum
First of all I apologize if this comes up as inappropriate in one way or another because truthfully, even though I'm a full Muslim through and through, being one since I was born, I'm a very curious person and I'm rather.. shall I say.. unknowledgable.. in terms of Muslim knowledge. So I intend to seek more.
Anyway back to the question, as we all know, most of the things we Muslims are required to do (Ramadan fasting, sadaqah, etc) and forbidden to do (eating pork, drinking khamr/alcoholic beverages, etc) have benefits that actually impact our lives in one way or another.
For example by fasting, we're basically making our bodies healthier by giving our digestive system time to take breaks and our bodies to thin up by lowering our food intake. Eating pork is forbidden due to pigs' tendency to eat literally everything, be it rotten food or garbage, making its meat unhealthy. Drinking khamr is forbidden due to its messing our liver and our health, while at the same time preventing us from being drunk and potentially harming other people. Sadaqah is good to help out or fellow less fortunate brothers and sisters, etc.
But despite all that, I have never heard a single thing on what benefits can Salat 5 times a day can bring to our daily lives. Every time I indirectly ask upon this matter to a more well knowledgable muslim, the answer is always "because we are required to do so" without mentioning any other positive side effects on that. Washing ourselves before prayer (wudu) is good because it makes sure our skin stays moist and healthy, but the prayer/salat itself doesn't seem to provide any benefit at all, aside from maybe a little exercise by its movements. Nevertheless, I still do it every day without (hopefully) forgetting or losing one single time.
So my question is exactly that: what are are some of the life benefits that Salat/prayer can give to our daily lives? Does it have one or is it just meant as a symbol of our faith?
Again I apologize if the question is inappropriate.
TL;DR: Most of the things muslims are required to do or forbidden to do have benefits to our daily lives, does Prayer/Salat have one?
