Hello, non-muslim here. This question started as I was working on a project of mine, experimenting with character design. As alt fashion becomes more accessible to those outside the traditionally white spheres of style that inspired it (scene, punk, goth) my desire is to explore this American trend across all types of cultures. I came to the point where I wanted to design a character belonging to an (even vaguely) occult subculture that wears a hijab.
My worry is that some of these subcultures skew toward Christian roots (i.e. Satanism) or do not translate easily to a traditionally halal style of dress. I worry that by creating a character inherently Muslim in her design, relation to these subcultures would upend her implied faith.
Of course, any non-Islamic religious symbols would not be included in her design (pentagrams, satanic symbols) and she would be dressed in a way that is untraditional, yet halal. (Think a modest version of Morticia Addams).
What I'm ultimately asking is whether or not a specifically-Islamic occult subculture exists that I can draw inspiration from. I'm aware Astrology was part of medieval Islamic culture but that now is generally considered Haram.
I want to avoid misappropriating Islamic culture in the name of inclusivity on this project and want to explore all corners of the monolithic "occult" "alternative" or "punk". I understand if this type of post is not permissible on this subreddit specifically but any help would be greatly appreciated!
