And don’t start with “ThAt’S hOW iT’s PRonOuncED iN EnGLisH”.

NO IT IS NOT.

I was born and raised in Ohio. English is my native English. I know how to pronounce the name of my faith, thank you very much.

I don’t know if it’s linguistic imperialism, ignorance, or simple apathy, but I get more and more annoyed by it as I get older. Do people not realize Arabic doesn’t use the same alphabet as English? That every single Arabic word in English is a transliteration? That there is in fact a “Z” sound in Arabic, and if we wanted you to pronounce Islam with a Z instead of an S WE WOULD HAVE SPELLED IT WITH A Z??

And no, it is not the same as “Paris” being pronounced differently in French versus English. French uses the same alphabet as English. You take a bunch of letters - French rules say pronounce them one way, English rules say pronounce them another.

Just look at the word, for crying out loud. Do you know how to pronounce the word “slim”? Have you ever in your life said “zlim” instead?

No?

Then why do you suddenly decide to say “zlim” when there’s a “Mu-“ in front of it?

Would it be better if I started spelling the word as “Mu-slim”? And “E-slam”? Because I can try to start that going.
