I’m a non Muslim, although I do have friends who follow the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad and I have nothing but respect and admiration for those that hold themselves to the standards as set forth in the Holy Qur’an.
Lately I’ve been astonished and dismayed at the misunderstanding and misrepresentation of what it means when women practice modesty, and I’m quite surprised that the fiercest opposition is not from the usual suspects (bigots and racists), but the so-called “woke” liberals.
I was on a subreddit recently and there was a photograph of a young Muslim woman on the beach and wearing a “burkini”, which for those unfamiliar with this garment, it is a modesty swimsuit designed by a Muslim Australian woman here in my hometown of Sydney.
What struck me most was the comments from “woke” individuals that claimed without evidence that the girl wearing it was oppressed and all that other nonsense.
I commented that it’s quite insulting to Muslim women to claim they are oppressed and have no choice in what they wear and pointed out it’s not just for religious purposes but cultural. I also mentioned it is a way of showing modest and self respect. Well, didn’t I open a can of worms and the comments and the downvotes ;irrelevant) I recurved for airing my opinions. I mentioned I have a friend and she is well educated and quite outspoken and she is also a devout Muslim (ie follows dietary laws and makes Haj, and obviously wears a hijab) and the responses I got were insane. The mental gymnastics they went through to be able to say this intelligent woman they don’t know is oppressed and too brainwashed to realise it or that she’s doing it because she’s afraid of burning in hell for eternity. Any effort from me to explain the concept of modesty was met with accusations of judging and slut shaming of those that don’t adhere to these particular standards. I make no judgement whatsoever of those who don’t adhere to these standards.
I feel that the concept of modesty, whether it’s Muslim, Christian, or Jew, is grossly misunderstood and misrepresented and the people that claim to be champions of minorities and victims of bigotry have a double standard when it comes to Islam.
Thank you for reading my long post, Salam!
