Asalamu alaykum brothers and sisters. This is mostly a rant so feel free to ignore if you have better things to do. These are just observations I’ve had as of late and wanted to know if others are seeing it too.
1) an increase in the following of astrology. It’s become quite insane how much it’s grown- it’s becoming accepted as normal nowadays. I am referring to modern astrology, not classical astrology which was more related to concepts of causation and tied everything back to God. I am talking about the astrology where people think their birth month is a cause of their lived experiences. This belief system is cult like. I know it’s been here for a while, but it seems more expressed than ever.
2) an increase in the belief of reality being a simulation. I’m not sure what this belief is called. However, a lot of people are starting to think that we live in a simulation. I think this belief has gotten more ground because of an increase in the use of predictive models, which have shown us that much of reality is predictable. Of course, as Muslims we know this reality of this life is merely temporary and we are currently in a test. This test is like a simulation of sorts, but not in the same sense that simulation theorists understand it. What’s really deceptive about this belief system is that it recognizes something that is true- that reality is wonderfully organized and structured, that behaviors follow patterns, etc. As Muslims who believe in God, we understand that too, and quite readily without having to think twice. However, believers in a simulation don’t necessarily believe in God. Many of them don’t even have a religion. It’s very ironic of them to reject God but at the same time think there is a designer to the simulation. They’re avoiding belief in God by defining for themselves who the designer is. Folks like Neil Tyson, who reject God, consider this idea of a simulation as potentially true. The irony in that is not even recognized, but hey, it’s because their atheism is more of an anti-Christian atheism than anything else.
3) increase ideas about aliens, the supernatural, reincarnation, spirituality have been spreading around a lot. None of them have a full picture of the truth, even if they may grasp at some understandings. For example, spiritual people recognize that the reality we experience is not all that there is. However, they don’t necessarily believe in God. Some of them think they themselves are divine. There’s also seems to be a rise in paganism and witchcraft. The people behind these movements trick people with half truths or false truths that sound nice. These groups are spreading deceptive and “sparkly” ideas across the internet.
All three above indicate to me two things: 1) people are being heavily misguided and 2) people are starting to realize this world and life is not all that it seems to be.
I know this seems quite meaningless. However, I do think it has the false ideas have a chance to impact those without much knowledge or young people. These young people may find some concepts spread by the people mentioned above and find their “cults” attractive. Some of these movements have some influential people behind them too. It can be so easy for some people to get swayed. Someone in emotional distress could also be misguided.
We live in an era of disinformation, lies, and deception. No, I’m not trying to suggest you think there is some sort of world order shakeup. I’m not suggesting any conspiracy theories. All I am saying is that it’s quite clear from the amount of disinformation being spread through social media platforms, that it can be so easy to be both convincing and convinced, especially for those who may not be mentally mature or may be emotionally vulnerable.
A part of me feels as if the world is slowly getting ready for the dajjal. As more and more people get confused by what to believe in about reality, the more open they may be to believing a deceiver who may present to them lies that seem like truths. Allah SWT knows when the dajjal will come. I am not suggesting that all the things I say are suggestive of the dajjal coming. I’m just feeling this way. Only Allah SWT knows the unseen, and I don’t claim to know it. I just feel so unsettled and disturbed by all the confusion being spread.
As all this happens, we should stick closer to the Qur’an more than ever. I have to do that myself. As long as we hold close to the Book of Allah SWT and the Sunnah, we won’t be misguided, In Sha Allah. I found myself today feeling disturbed, but simply listened to the Qur’an with translation and felt the disturbing thoughts slip away. The Qur’an can’t simply be a book we recite, we must engage with it closely. If you have younger siblings or even older siblings who are taken to this world, kindly suggest that they read the Qur’an (with translation) so they can understand truth from falsehood. The Qur’an will help us stay away from the falsehood, In Sha Allah. We don’t want to be on the wrong side as the world becomes deceived by falsehoods. Also, if you know any lonely Muslims of your same gender, stick close to them and give them a sense of belonging. That way, their chances of feeling attracted to false cults will be mitigated, In Sha Allah. They can feel closer to the Ummah and not feel like they have to resort to the groups of the misguided.
I don’t know why I felt so compelled to write this, but I did, mostly as a reminder to myself to stick close to the Qur’an. May Allah SWT keep your heart and my heart attached to Islam till the day we depart this world. Allah SWT knows best.
