Tamkin - Stability or fixity. The station of stability (tamkin) is opposite the station of variegation (talwin). Some consider the station of stability to be superior to variegation, however, the Verifiers and Perfect Knowers of Allah are not limited by either of these stations. In them the two are combined. They are the Perfect Ones who possess stability in variegation in accordance with Allah's never-ending Self-transmutations.
Tamkin means to be firmly rooted. It is the darajah or the realm of the Prophets. Imam Jujani defines tamkin as a state where one is constantly in a state of uprightness. One does not reach the state of tamkin until after one has been tried. And then after you are tried, if you are patient (sabr), as in true steadfastness, a constant state of non-attachment from the world, of letting go, through continuous endurance of this, Allah will cause you to arise as upright in all aspects of life. And thus it is said that when Allah loves a servant He will test them with trials.
When one is facing difficult trials in life, it is not important that you know what it is for (there are generally three reasons why trials are sent). What is required is that you respond appropriate, as that will determine the end.
