Once Prophet was prostrating near Kaba where all the leaders of Quraish were gathered. Abu Jahl said, who will bring the intestines of the camel that we sacrificed yesterday and put them over Muhammed?
Uqba volunteered for the act. He went away and came back with the intestines, blood, and dung of a slaughtered camel. This camel was sacrificed the previous day and these intestines were full of filth, so the smell from this filth would be intoxicating.
The man went ahead and dumped all that trash over Prophet while he was prostrating. The prophet couldn’t get up due to the weight of that filth and since he was praying he couldn’t move to clean himself.
All of his companions stood there watching helplessly, nobody among his companions dared to help him because that would have meant going against the leaders of Quraish.
Their uncrowned king, the final and most beloved Prophet of Allah pinned down under the weight of camel bowels! While this was happening, the leaders of the Quraish were rolling on the floor with laughter.
No angel descended to clean the Prophet, the earth didn’t split asunder and swallowed the Quraish. It was only after someone called upon Fatima who came and cleaned the Prophet. And while she is cleaning up her father, she is weeping at the sight of her beloved father.
She knew how much her father loved ‘taharah’-purification and here he lies covered in camel bowels. She’s cleaning him up, crying, and cursing the leaders of Quraish. Imagine what a child will go through after witnessing his/her father being humiliated like that!
When was the last time, you saw someone being humiliated like that? When was the last time, you saw anyone, let alone a pious person, in your locality being humiliated as such in front of everyone?
Muhammed was the final Prophet of Allah and here he’s being humiliated in the streets of Mecca. He’s the same person whom Allah invited on his Arsh- a place where even Gibreel couldn’t tread, he’s the same person who will intercede on Qiyamah and get millions out of Jahanum, he’s the same person who will be in charge of Hauz-e-Kaunsar, the same person to whom Allah said that I will give you so much that you will be content!
Where is the promised contentment?
His beloved daughter is cleaning camel bowels off him. After she finished, Prophet consoled her.
In another incident, Uqba approached the Prophet from behind and strangled him with his robe until Prophet fell down due to suffocation. At another time, he spat at Prophet.
Who can claim to be nobler than the Prophet?
And here he is, being strangled, spat at, humiliated and dragged through the streets of his birthplace. Prophet was in his 40s when he was facing this sort of humiliation, nearing old age yet there was no respite. Once a group of men attacked him, Abu Bakr intervened only to receive the same treatment. The attackers only left because they thought both of them are dead! The best among the mankind and his best friend lying unconscious in the streets of Mecca, presumed to be dead!
How can Allah allow his beloved to be dealt as such? But if Allah allowed the best of mankind to face such hardships then we too will be tested and tried in our limited capacities.
It might not be the Uqba that will strangle us, it might be something intangible but we will feel suffocated.
It might not be the camel bowels that stink us, it might be something heavy and disgusting but we too will seem to collapse.
You will have your share of Uqbas in your life that will drag you through the dirt but until you derive your strength from HIM, you will see your Uqba dismembered in Badr. It might take a decade between the humiliation of Mecca and vengeance of Badr but it will happen.
The Prophet said, I wish I could meet my brothers.” His companions said, “Are we not your brothers?” The Prophet said, “You are my companions, but my brothers are those who have faith in me although they never saw me.” The best among all creations, even after going through so much in his life, longed to meet you and me.
If that doesn’t make you happy, I don’t know what else will!
