This question had baffled many including religious people and has even led many to steer away from Allah.

If Allah loves you then why does HE put you in trials that only make you suffer?

Those people who worship Allah, why does HE put them in misery and pain? Why can’t they get what they want even if they worship Allah? Allah claims to love us more than anyone, what sort of lover wants to see their beloved suffer?

To understand the answer one has to visit the life of the most beloved person to Allah- our Prophet. No human can grasp the grandeur of our Prophet apart from other Prophets.

The very Prophet upon whom Allah and His angels send salutations was humiliated in the streets of Makkah, camel bowels were dumped over him while he was prostrating before his Lord- that too by the members of his own family.

Once he was so severely beaten in Makkah that only someone’s intervention saved his life, his family and friends were humiliated and killed in the streets of Makkah. He had to flee his birthplace to save his life.

His family had to starve- Allah sent down food from heaven for the children of Israel and his beloved had to tie rocks to his abdomen because of the pangs of hunger!

He saw his most beloved wife, his bedrock, go frail and then die right in front of him and he couldn’t do anything about it. He saw his friends and followers being beaten to the last inch of their lives and no angels descended to help them out.

One sahabi called Khabab had indentations on his back. When Umar asked about the cause of these indentations, Khabab replied that he was laid on hot coals by the leaders of Quraish, the coals burnt through his flesh and the coals were doused out by his oozing blood.

Prophet was witnessing all of this and no divine intervention occurred. And be reminded that he was the same Prophet who just ‘wished’ to have Kaba as Qibla and it was done. He didn’t even ask Allah to make Kaba as Qibla, he just wished it in his heart!

That very Prophet is witnessing his friends and family being humiliated and tortured. That very Prophet visited Taif with a lot of hopes, he was not only humiliated there but he was beaten and stoned there, he bled so profusely that blood filled his shoes.

He was so badly beaten that he collapsed near the orchard of one of his enemies from Quraish. Even that Quraishi felt sorry at his condition, he sent one of his slaves with some food to Prophet. Imagine how bad it must be that even your enemy feels sorry for you!

If pain and sufferings were punishments from Allah then no Prophet would have gone through them, least of all our Prophet.

There isn't any tragedy that he didn’t face. He was orphaned before 7, he saw his wife, his children die, he knew that his grandchildren would be put on stakes, he spent his entire life in extreme poverty, he suffered like no other being & Allah refers to him as his beloved!

It alludes to the fact that sufferings are not a measure of Allah's wrath or mercy. If that was the case then Firaon wouldn't have been the most powerful person to walk on Earth, Qaroon wouldn't have been the richest, and Abu Jahl wouldn't have been the wisest among Arabs.

You can be in penury like Abu Darda and be successful, you can be disfigured like Julaibeeb and still find love in your life, you can have a haunting past like Umar and still create the brightest future.

You can be up against an army, be killed like Hussain, and yet emerge victoriously. You just have to believe in Him because He still believes in you! Don't give up on yourself because he hasn't given up on you.

Sabr.

InShaAllah Khair :)
