Once there was this poor Sahabi called Abu Aqil r.a.. He was among the poorest of sahaba, literally living hand to mouth. During the expedition of Tabuk, Prophet asked sahaba for charities.
Abu Aqil didn’t have anything at home, so he went out and worked at some place and got paid in dates. Abu Aqil took some dates for his family and brought the rest to the Prophet.
Some sahaba had given camels, some horses, some food for the entire expedition while Abu Aqil is standing there with a handful of dates.
When he reached to Prophet he explained his limited charity but being the Prophet he was, Rasoolullah became immensely happy because it’s the intention that matters. Our Prophet knew Abu Aqil and his condition and despite that, he came forward with his contribution.
While he was handing over his charity to Prophet some hypocrites jeered at his contribution. They mocked him and said, what benefit would a handful of dates make to this expedition?
Hearing this Prophet handed the dates to another sahabi and said, “Spread these dates over the entire charity, these dates although little carry the weight of mount Uhad”
Not only did Prophet come to defend the charity of Abu Aqil but even Allah revealed Quran in support of Abu Aqil!
“THOSE WHO CRITICIZE THE CONTRIBUTORS AMONG THE BELIEVERS CONCERNING [THEIR] CHARITIES AND [CRITICIZE] THE ONES WHO FIND NOTHING [TO SPEND] EXCEPT THEIR EFFORT, SO THEY RIDICULE THEM – ALLAH WILL RIDICULE THEM, AND THEY WILL HAVE A PAINFUL PUNISHMENT.” 9:79
Allah takes note of the ridicule and then Allah is saying that HE will ridicule them on behalf of Abu Aqil! They didn’t cause him any physical harm of anything, they just said some painful words and Allah promises them of painful punishment!
Imagine Allah himself coming to someone’s defence whom you mocked! Some people are too invaluable in the world to stand up for themselves then Allah takes it upon himself to stand up for them!
As Prophet said, there are some people from this nation who are dishevelled, lack money, and social status, but if they take an oath by God, God will surely honour that oath. In the above case, there was no oath taken nothing and yet Allah revealed Quran in support of Abu Aqil!
