Assalamu alaykum, I am 25F from Eastern Europe raised as a catholic, however I never liked the catholic church, despite believing in God. I wish to get closer to God and seek for a path to follow. I have been considering converting to either Islam or Orthodox Christianity. I have read the Quran and I believe there is something truly divine about it, my heart wants to follow islam, I can’t rationally explain it.
However, there are a couple of things that bother me and prevent me from converting. One of them is the issue of polygyny. Now, I understand that life in the past was very different. Women and children were completely dependent on men, so life for a widow or a divorced woman would have been very difficult, so being a 2nd wife and having a man to take care of you and your kids was by far better option that having no man at all.
Thus, I am NOT asking why islam permits polygyny.
Rather what bothers me is that a 1st wife seems to have no say in this matter and can be forced into this relationship by her husband. If I convert to islam, I won’t be able to marry non muslim man. I want to be a wife and a mother and have a traditional monogamous family unit, one husband one wife and our children. No co-wives, no part time husbands. Just simple traditional family unit, where husband comes back to his wife and children everyday. But in islam a man doesn’t need a permission from his first wife to marry another and a wife cannot divorce him for that. A man has a right to polygyny, but as a woman do I have a right to monogamy? Can a man force me into a marriage like that against my will? Is there something I could do to protect myself legally from being forced into polygamy?
If not this, I might have already converted, since I like everything else about islam, but now I am thinking maybe its better to remain christian.
