Sincere question: Is the M. A. S. Abdel Haleem Qur'an a good translation for a native English speaker?

Hello friends,

To start, this is a truly sincere question. I'm not looking to read the Qur'an to gain ammunition against Islam like so many people do. I truly want to learn and understand - mainly because I have lots of lovely Muslim friends and colleagues I wish to be able to relate to more.

I've searched the sub and found many different recommendations but thought I'd ask to seek a more direct answer before I commit to buying a copy.

I'm looking for a translation that is as close to the original as possible whilst also maybe giving some footnotes to give some cultural and historical context (because I'm sure some cultural context will be lost on an English bloke!)
