Hello -

I am a teacher and our district would like us to use Salman Rushdie's novel Haroun and the Sea of Stories in order to diversify our curriculum. However, I'm wary given the controversy he created with his book The Satanic Verses. Haroun is also an allegory on the fatwa placed on him by Ayatollah Khomeini; Haroun's father is a storyteller who loses his ability to speak. Even if the novel can be taught without addressing that controversy, I worry that Rushdie would offend some of our parents, who are old enough to know about/remember the controversy. Most of our Muslim students come from India, Pakistan, and Syria and are Sunni, for what that is worth.

Thanks for any insights or guidance you can provide.
