Foreword: I have no idea if this is the right place for this question, please remove if it isn't, or let me know where would be a better place.

Hello all,

I know... very close to nothing about Islam. I've lurked on here a bit and done some googling and have determined that at the very least, I am interested in the religion. But I don't know what are the primary things to know, or where to start? I hear people talking a lot about not only the Qur'an but also hadiths and about a million other things and... that is a lot of reading. Not opposed to reading but there has to be a good starting point, right? Bc I know with christianity you are largely not recommended to just grab a bible and start with Genesis 1:1, so I assume Islam is about the same, where you need to learn some of the basics before starting to immerse yourself in the holy texts themselves?

Anyway I have a million questions. My father's family is jewish and I was raised mostly catholic, and as far as I know there's basically no muslim community in my area, or at least not an open one, to the point where I actually have never met a muslim in my day-to-day life since about middle school. Idk if it's considered acceptable to just walk into a mosque to ask said questions (I'm guessing probably not) and googling tends to drop me in the middle of religious information with no concept of where to begin or what the core knowledge needs to be.

So this has been a very drawn-out way of saying "I have no idea where to start determining if islam is a belief system for me, can someone please help" but that's basically my question. Sorry again if this is the wrong place for said questions, but if anyone could help me out I'd be much obliged.
