Generally speaking, you put money in stocks, and then your profit and loss depend on how the company performs. You are not doing anything else except maybe selling it when it's high and buying it when it's low. But besides that, you are not doing anything else.
That's why gambling is haram too. Because you put money in a slot machine (for example) and it depends on the chance if you won or lost something.
