There is something about Bilal رضي الله عنه that makes me very emotional. Since long, I have been thinking of sharing it. I'm sure, many of you are already aware of most things below. But, these are so heartwarming that they deserve frequent mention.
- He was one of the earliest muslims. Being a black slave, was one of the most vulnerable. Yet, his love for Allah and His prophet صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم was unflinching. He bore some of the worst tortures, which included pressing him bare-back over burning dessert sand under the weight of heavy stones, at the hands of the Quraysh leaders. He would just bear it patiently while declaring "Ahad", which means God is only One!
- Once somebody asked him that what did he get other than pain and torture by following Muhammadصلى الله عليه وآله وسلم? To this Bilal replied that when buy even a cheap utensil from market, don't you tap to ring it and check if it has any crack? Do you think that jannah is so cheap that Allah will admit me there without even testing how sound my faith is? See how his answer correlates with the ayah: Quran 3:142 .
- Abu Dharr Ghaffari رضي الله عنه once had an argument with him. He called Bilal son of a black woman in the heat of the moment. Prophet felt hurt and rebuked Abu Dharr for sticking to racism of jahilliyah. Abu Dharr shuddered as he realized his mistake. He placed his head on ground and swore that he will not raise it till Bilal presses his foot on it.
- Once our prophet declared that he heard Bilal's footsteps in Paradise. He asked Bilal about what special deeds he has? To this, Bilal said he has nothing special, but he offers nafl after every wudhu he makes.
- Now my favourite part. This never fails to bring tears in my eyes and is the reason I'm so emotional about him. All sahabah were extremely pained by prophet's leaving of this world. We all know how impulsively Umar رضي الله عنه reacted. Bilal's pain was no less. HE JUST COULDN'T IMAGINE HIMSELF IN MADINAH WITHOUT BEING ABLE TO SEE PROPHET THERE! So, he enrolled himself in the army and vowed to remain at the frontiers for all his remaining life. But, PROPHET'S LOVE FOR BILAL WAS NO LESS EITHER! Once Bilal got ziyarah of his belovedصلى الله عليه وآله وسلم in a dream. He saw him complaining: "What's this tyranny Bilal that you never come to my streets?" (Tissues anybody? My teary eyes are barely allowing me to type. Just can't imagine how it feels to be longed by our prophet, just as Bilal was longed by him!) Soon, he rushed to Madina. Once there, prophet's grandsons Hasan and Husain رضي الله عنهما had a request. They wanted to hear the azan of prophet's time! How would Bilal refuse them? As he said the azan, there was no less than a mayhem at Madina. People, including women and children, rushed to the mosque enchanted by the voice.
May Allah inspire us all to follow his footsteps!
