Jafar Ibn Muhammad, the great Medinan mujtahid and great grandson of Ali ibn abi Talib, said: Ali never attributed shirk or hypocrisy to those who fought against him. Rather, he said: “They are our brothers, but they are rebelling.” (Bihar al-Anwar 298)

The hadith is authentic to shia standards, but not our (sunni) standards. But it is significant coming from their own narrations. And it is a perfect summary of the sunni view on the topic.

Some of the shias tried to say that the Imam was just doing taqiyya. But that is not taken into consideration by us, as he was far above confusing or deceiving the masses, no matter the consequences. Such was his bravery and upholding of the Sunnah.
