Question about prayer time

Hi all

I live in North America and look at the local mosque's website to check prayer times. They list three things, q. The time the prayer begins, w. The adhan time and 3. The time the prayer will be held in the mosque.

I often just pray a few minutes after the "begin" time. However, someone I know keeps insisting tht I should wait until after the Adhan time has passed. Sometimes the Adhan time is a couple minutes after the "begin" time and sometimes it's like a half hour later. I usually want to finish so I don't get lazy later.

Is it not allowed for me to pray before the Adhan timing?
