Basic Fiqh of Worship: Part One (Matn Ibn Ashir)

قواعد الإسلام خمس واجبات وهي الشهادتان شرط الباقيات

Section (On the Pillars of Islam): [O]bedience of all the body limbs in speech and actions is what is Islam, the High (way of life) The pillars of Islam are five necessary acts. And they are: (1) the two testifications (Shahada) which is a precondition for the rest (of the pillars).

ثم الصلاة والزكاة في القطاع والحج والصوم على من استطاع

Then (also among the pillars) are (2) the formal prayer (Salah), (3) Zakat (fixed share alms) from livestock and cash savings, (4) fasting (in Ramadan), and (5) performing Hajj for whoever is able (to find physical and material means).

الإيمان جزم بالالـه والكتب والرسل والأملاك مع بعث قريب

'Īmān is a firm belief in the One God, the divinely revealed books, the messengers, the angels, along with the resurrection (of the dead from their graves) - which has come near

وقدر كذا صراط ميزان حوض النبي جنة ونيران

And belief in divine destiny. Likewise (is treated the belief in) the bridge over the Hellfire, the balance set up to weigh actions, the cistern of the Prophet (May Allah bless him and give him peace), the Paradise (in the next world), and the Hellfire.

وأما الإحسان فقال من دراه أن تعبد الله كأنك تراه

As for Ihsān, then the one who fully grasped it (i.e. the Prophet Muhammad) said: (It is) that you worship Allah as if you see Him

إن لم تكن تراه فإنه يراك والدين ذي ثلاث خذ أقوى عراك

If you do not see Him, then (you should know) that He verily sees you. | And the dīn is (comprised of) these three aspects. So, grab on to it like your firmest handhold.
