Winning money in modern sports.

Say two people are playing a game of tennis, and they both put in $20, winner takes all. Is this allowed in Islam?

I know it's permissible in archery contests and horse/camel racing, but does this ruling translate into modern day sports? Obviously these sports didn't exist back then so I would assume the ruling is a general ruling, and can apply to modern day sports. Any one know anything I don't?
