As salamu alaykum dear brothers and sisters,

I just want to share a quick reminder:

All human beings have biases, leanings, approaches and methodologies to every topic – that they share with others and oppose others with. Everyone has their own level of knowledge, too. Knowing this helps us filter what people say to avoid harm and gain benefit.

This applies to scholars of course, but every user on this subreddit also has their own leanings and views, some of which may not be totally clear and thus be misleading.

Just yesterday, a user was declaring that the order of surahs in the Quran is arbitrary in response to a question. That is not a standard sunni belief or viewpoint, let alone fact! I've only heard this absurd claim from orientalists and possibly some shias. Maybe he or she just didn't know better.

By Allah's mercy I could comment with a decent response, and the wrong comment was deleted by the other user.

Now imagine if everyone collectively had missed that comment or didn't have time to respond—someone else who didn't know better could read and be deeply misled.

So please, don't browse this subreddit carelessly to learn your religion. What gets written on here should be subject to heavy skepticism and scrutiny.

There are dozens of different "groups" and viewpoints on here, from within and outside Islam, and often times their unacceptable points slip through without a standard sunni response or explanation.

Moreover, this subreddit is just for discussion among average people, and most of what you read is not what Islam says about topic X, but rather what an average English-speaking Muslim thinks that Islam says about X. Big difference.

This sounds like common sense, but indeed a reminder benefits the believer.

(And of course there are clear points where every Muslim is just a Muslim, without any debate between them. But in most things there are alternative views.)
