Remember That Only When Racism Ended, We Became an Ummah in Surah Al-Anfal

Sometimes we forget that the Muslims of the past had all sorts of hostility in the forms of racism and tribalism back then, and some of which that has seeped through today. In a way our Islamic history shows that we had a very good experiential resumé in that regard.

And so when we forget where we came from, we can undermine how the majority of the Arabian people's hearts in the peninsula at some point in time were miraculously united by a brotherhood forged by Allah, Himself.

Surah Al-Anfal(8): Verse 63

Beyond partaking in movements that advocate human rights for different racial groups, we must remember that Allah built a world for us that was free from the very racism, prejudice, and ignorance we are trying to eradicate today. And it was our Ummah that was founded on these grounds. And it still lives on to this day. Perhaps we forgot who we were, perhaps we lost hope in ever becoming as such. But we still can.

Because we still catch these moments when we take a look at the rows in prayer. Men and women of different colors, ethnicities, statuses all aligned for one God. Our limbs may affirm this gift of unity when we stand, but our hearts may need a little more work to remember again. Remember that this was something we already achieved, by Allah's grace once upon a time.

Allah asserts that this wouldn't be possible even if there were campaigns funded by all the fortunes of the world for this cause. Instead this is an exclusive divine gift given to those that share the foundations of the true belief in God, struggling towards His cause. The gift that enabled us to be an exemplary community.

A bond of unity amongst billions of Muslims regardless of our race, color and culture is enough of a sign for all. For each one of us to be able to have genuine love and care for what we go through individually and collectively, is an exclusive golden stamp that only Islam has given us to showcase to the world.

وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ أَلَّفَ بَيْنَهُمْ ۚ
