The concept of the houris/companions of Heaven has been disturbing me on so many levels. I just can't reconcile the notion that Allah would want us to be so carnal when we're in Jannat, the literal final frontier of spirituality, happiness, peace, and basically anything else that's pure. And yet what is something that we're slated to receive? Women that are made just for people's most base, least spiritual desire. My issue is not with what women get, so don't think that. But my issue is with the concept as a whole. It's just so wrong and contradictory to one of the main principles of Islam of piety. What about your wife, why would someone abandon her for these artificial beings? People always say that your wife is better than them or you don't feel jealousy, but that's essentially just putting lipstick on a pig; it doesn't address the root issue.
These are my personal theories for what the houris could really be that I've heard
- Wives for men who never got the chance to marry but wanted a wife
- Beautiful servants who exist for a completely different purpose
- Some sort of metaphor that isn't meant to be taken literally but instead used to give us a look into their scope
Please help me reaffirm any of these. If you don't I'm probably gonna lose my mind and spiral somewhere I don't want to be. I beg of you, please relieve me of this.
