Had the Babylonian people of prophet Ibrahim's time been misguided so much they literally worshipped the idols of their gods more than the gods they supposed to represent?

This is based on the townspeople's claim that there's no way the idol of Marduk would destroy the other statues in retaliation of Ibrahim's claim, while they could've just reasoned that Marduk himself came to destroy the other idols so that there's only his idol that remained.
