The Prophet said "The most exalted amongst you in God's sight on the day of judgment shall be those who hungered and meditated the longest for His sake, while the most loathsome among you in His sight on that day will be those who slept, ate, and drank abundantly."

The Prophet said "Truly, God glorifies before His angels regarding the man who eats and drinks but little in the world"

I've been reading about the benefits of hunger in a book by Al Ghazali called On Disciplining the Soul. It's been very enlightening. I wanted to share some things with the rest of the subreddit. I hope everyone is able to complete the fasts of Shawwal this year, inshAllah, and this gives each of us a little bit more motivation!

Al Ghazali discusses ten benefits of hunger in a rather lengthy discourse, which I've summarized below. If you really reflect on the points below, you probably remember feeling each of them at some point during Ramadan.

10 benefits of hunger:

1 - gives one clarity of thought.

2 - softens the heart in His remembrance.

3 - reinforces sense of helplessness, reliance on Allah.

4 - instills fear in the punishment of the fire, in which hunger and thirst is extreme.

5* - breaks ones desire to sin and produces mastery over the soul.

6 - repels sleep

7 - allows for longer acts of worship (no cooking, shopping, cleaning, bathroom breaks, etc)

8 - improves the health.

9 - reduces the burden of making more income to purchase food.

10 - allows one to sympathize with the less fortunate and give more charity.

*Most important per Al Ghazali
