I just watched a Cow trailer accident and it jogged a very bad memory.
It happened during the morning of Eid ul Adha. So the butchers were coming in to perform Qurbani. I was in my early 20s. Even though I was young I try to be very active in the community and try to help people.
So, our cow wasn’t slaughtered so, I was hanging out and watching some other cows. Then there came this group. The cow belonged to a family where the father was sick and there were no male children. So, there was this lady, her daughter and some sort of distant relative.
It was very clear the butcher did not look right. He was probably intoxicated. So, a local elder performed the initial cut and he left as he was busy. He instructed to cut the jugular properly as he left. Now the butcher did not react immediately. 20 seconds passed by I can see the cow dying very slow. It was a bad thing. I kept yelling finish the kill. So, did the mother and the daughter.
I could see the tear dripping down the cows cheeks. The cow was clearly in excruciating pain. And the butcher for some reason stood by and he kinda was drowsy. He slowly picked the knife and rather then the cutting jugular, he kept stabbing the open throat. I got really mad and screamed at him.
And his response was dropping the knife and walking away. I think a solid 2 minutes has passed. The cow was in incredible pain and it kept throbbing.
Then it happened. I walked to him. I held his left hand and boom slapped him with all my rage. I was filled with so much anger, I kind of was blinded by it.
Everything stopped. The butcher was falling down but as I was holding him, he could not.
Everything was silent. Seeing that an expert butcher came ahead quickly and he put the cow down by properly doing the job.
After that incident I kept asking myself, "was I in the wrong?". I don’t know. The butcher took advantage of the female client, he made a animal suffer unjustifiably and he did not respond to our requests. Every seconds felt like an eternity as I saw the helpless animal. It is I think is very important to do the slaughtering extremely quickly.
It would have been more rational to ask the neighbouring expert butcher first to help us out. I acted brashly, I have learned from my mistake. I would never do something like that.
