The definition of envy in Islam: the wish for a blessing to be taken away from a person/nation/group.

Example 1: I hope their oil wells dry out!

Example 2: I wish them to fail in their new business!

...etc.

My dear brothers and sisters this blessing was and always will be bestowed on that person from God سبحانه وتعالى, no one else. So if a person is envious it’s like they’re objecting to God’s will (astaghfirullah) and that’s such an arrogant, and selfish mentality to have. It’s exactly what Satan did when Allah ordered him to bow to Adam. Therefore, it’s the first sin to be committed.

The scholars have divided envy into two types:

1- Actual: this the straight up haram type and it’s the desire for someone to lose a blessing they have.

2- Figurative: that’s the permissible type of envy. It’s the wish to have that blessing you see on others but without the desire that they lose it.

- if that blessing happens to be from the blessings of the Dunia then that’s ok - if it’s a blessing linked to the hereafter then it’s preferred (mustahabb مستحب) like wishing you can read and memorise the Quran like X person did or wishing you had money to donate like Y person.
