Assalamualaikum,
I am a recent convert who just heard that music is prohibited in Islam. Is this true, and to what extent is this true? I do refrain from listening to music that teaches bad messages (drugs, Zina, etc.), so most of the music I listen to is instrumental, (classical or house) or doesn't have profane language or subjects. I also play musical instruments (piano, and double bass) and have the opportunity to get school scholarships and job opportunities because of my skill in these. I hope I don't have to quit my musical activities as I enjoy doing them and my parents won't be happy either. Am I committing a sin by playing or listening to music even though I make sure I stay away from prohibited subjects? Any help and comments are welcome. Thank you.
