Asallamu alaikum. Happy Ramadan to my fellow brothers and sisters. I hope everyone is doing their best to maintain fasting and have a better relationship with Allah. This is my first post here, so I’m don’t know the lingo/format of making posts haha. Today, I was reading Surah Luqman and I came across its 6th Ayat. I’m reading the Surah on the Quran Majeed app because I like reading the translation and tafsir. It states “And among mankind is he who buys frivolous discourse so that he may divert (others) from the way of Allah without knowledge, and should mock at it. For those there is degrading doom.” I read the tafsir concerning this manner and it talks about how night-clubs, gambling, and social life that host vulgar music, dancing, and alcohol are considered frivolous discourse. One part of the tafsir that caught my attention was that the “crucial distinguishing element of such ‘discourse’ has been indicated here- it is commercialized and has to be bought. Packaged and purchasable entertainment is an outstanding feature of this age.” Upon reading this, I thought about video games. You are playing with people and enjoying entertainment with them while playing video games. While not harmful as the other discourse mentioned, it still counts as an entertainment. My question here is buying video games considered frivolous discourse?
