Asalam alaykum brothers and sisters.

This upcoming Ramadan will, inshallah, be my second Ramadan as a Muslim revert. The first was a powerful and amazing experience, and I can honestly say that since that month I have not missed a single prayer, alhamdulillah. I always struggled with praying when I first converted because the severity hadn't sunk in yet, but I'm extremely diligent now.

I never understood why some brothers said they needed Ramadan to give them a boost, but now I'm starting to feel why. I've realized my prayers are getting shorter, my dhikr less frequent, my duas less heartfelt. Something about the passage of time and getting caught up in the dunya makes you complacent; absent-minded. You don't forget Allah, but you seem to value the time you spend with Him less.

And then Ramadan arrives, and your love for Allah cannot be ignored. You power through 30 days of fasting and spiritual introspection, making new resolutions to be the Muslim you always wanted to be. I like to think that we get permanent upgrades after each Ramadan, where something you've always wanted to do finally "sticks". Inshallah I can make the Sunnah prayers a part of my daily routine.

I think now, just three weeks out, Ramadan is coming at a time I need it most. Even though the masajid are closed because of the virus and we'll likely not get to enjoy the iftar dinners with our fellow Muslims, the taraweeh prayers, or staying up late at the masjid, we'll never cease to remember Allah.

Let's make the most of this Ramadan, and may Allah keep us and our families safe; may He look after humanity during this difficult time, and may He ignite the charitable and loving spirit of communities all over the world to help those who need it most. Ameen
