I’m a Muslim, and that fact is that way too many Muslims hold beliefs that are so out of touch with the true Islam and basic human rights.
An overwhelming majority of Muslims in Egypt and Pakistan believe that apostasy is punishable by DEATH.
Modern sharia law is not what the Prophet (pbuh) taught. Harsh punishments were RARELY implemented, and were there as a deterrent according to many wise contemporaries.
The fact is that the majority of scholars and Islamic preachers nowadays are overwhelmingly ultra-conservative, and intolerant of people of other faiths.
They want to stone every adulterer, but off the hands of every thief, and hold very disturbing beliefs about women and homosexuals.
Yes, there are many moderate Muslim countries like Bosnia, Turkey, Albania, Kosovo, Indonesia, Bangladesh, ...
But there are also countries where the vast majority of Muslims have been radicalized: Afghanistan, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Libya, Iraq, ...
As Muslims we need to come together and support intellectual liberal scholars and thinkers to represent our beautiful religion.
Islam is perfect, but as a man run institution, it has become deeply flawed.
