Asalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu,
This is not to debate whether it's obligatory or not although that can be your answer.
It's as simple as the question in the title: - If you keep the beard, why? - If you don't keep the beard, why?
My reason: Things happened that made me start thinking about my life and what'll happen in the afterlife.
I watched a video on the questioning in the grave. The speaker said our answers will be based on what we did in life. Some people will be made to forget because they didn't act on the knowledge they gained.
When they reached the part about the prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam, they said answers would vary. - One might not have an answer. - One might say "he was rasuulallah". - One who learned his, Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam, names and what they mean will answer based on that. - If someone acted on his, Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam, sunnah they'd say it. Like "he used to drink with his right hand, so I drank with my right hand too", etc.
Subhanallah it made a lot of sense, all of that knowledge and those actions are beneficial and will help us from the moment our akhira begins.
It made me start trying to learn more about sunnah and wanting to follow it. Alhamdulillah there's more to it today but I'm just talking about me back then.
So, my thought was beard is a sunnah of the Prophet, Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam, which goes with us into the grave. It also seemed like the easiest option since I didn't have to do anything, just let it grow.
