Our desires can have many forms but the most insidious form is when we accept inconsistencies in our thoughts or reject clear conclusions to avoid greater questions of our history.
So if you ever see a rebuttal or argument for a position in Islam end with or include, "but the majority said so", then know that this is where the nafs is coming in. Arguments should stand on their own and if they lead to a conclusion opposing majority thinking then the honest approach is to see where a mistake is made, NOT to hide or reject the conclusion only so one can conform to the majority.
