I'm a faithful muslim, have been a muslim my whole life, was raised, born and lived my whole life surrounded by a family full of very religious (albeit modern) muslims. All this time I've been living my life abiding by the rules of Islam and avoiding prohibited stuff (general stuff like eating pork or drinking alcohol) and so far I feel like people are wrong about our laws being very limiting to our lifestyle.

One day I attended a (study session with an ustad(?) I don't know how you say this in english) and the ustadz said that there are a lot of laws that more Muslims should know and obey, but what really bothers me is that these laws are very limiting and sounds to me like trying to make us feel like we're living in the 1st century or something. He says that most modern things are haram and Muslims should be staying away from them, such as social media, joking/making fun about fake things (meme), wearing pants (either it's male or female, male should be wearing the long robe (again I don't know what it's called in english), and female should be wearing full body covering clothes that completely hide their body apart from their face), listening to modern music, drawing anything other than calligraphy, and not growing a beard/shaving off beard (I can't even grow a single hair near my lip and I'm almost 22!).

Why is being a muslim so limiting? I'm trying to abide by Islam laws for as much as I can but not being able to enjoy most modern things in this modern world feels like it's going to be hard for me.

I need some advice my friends, thank you very much, and apologize for my mediocre english.
