4:148 God does not like the public mention of evil, save by one wronged. God is hearing, knowing.

4:149 If you disclose what is good or hide it, or forgive evil: God is pardoning, capable/determining.

Some say that this refers to saying bad words when one has been wronged, but I think that is not the case. Some say that 4:149 is about "doing good", but I also think that is also not the case.

Here is Muhammad Asad's interpretation:

As some of the commentators (e.g., Razi) point out, this may refer to giving currency to earlier sayings or deeds of the repentant sinners - both hypocrites and outright deniers of the truth - mentioned in the preceding two verses: an interpretation which seems to be borne out by the context. However, the above statement has a general import as well: it prohibits the public mention of anybody's evil deeds or sayings, "unless it be by him who has been wronged (thereby)"- which also implies that evil behaviour which affects the society as a whole may be made public if the interests of the wronged party - in this case, the society as such - demand it.

I have also seen other interpretations which I take to be wrong or not very plausible. Edip Yuksel in his heading for the verse wrote:

Do Not Publicize Personal Negative Events Unless They Cause Injustice

In the context, I take the meaning here to include an admonition not to claim individuals among us to belong to the groups outlined at 4:144-145 except under the condition provided for here at 4:148.

He seems to also agree with the general sentiment not to mention evil deeds of others save if one is wronged.

So what implication does that have to posting about what other say, criticizing others, and so on. What are your thoughts on 4:148? And what do you think 4:149 is about? It clearly talks about publicly disclosing good or hiding it and then says "forgive evil", but it does not mention the disclosure of evil. Keep in mind that the word for "disclosure" is a verb and is from a different root than that for the noun translated as "public mention" in 4:148. The word for "evil" is the same.
