Memorizing the Qur'an without knowing it's meaning was considered bid'ah by classical scholars

Abdullah bin Masud says as reported in Al-Zuhud Wa Al-Raqaiq of Ibn al-Mubarak:

ليس حفظ القرآن بحفظ الحروف،ولكن بإقامة حدوده

Memorization of Quran is not by memorizing its letters but by establishing its limits (i.e by understanding and practicing upon it).

Imam Abu Bakr al Turtushi al Maliki (520 H) said in al Hawadith wal Bidah:

مما ابتدعه الناس فى القرآن الاقتصار على حفظ حروفه دون التفقه فيها

Amongst what people have innovated about the Quran, is restricting to memorizing its letters only, without understanding in that.

Also same scholar:

" وإنما وجه إنكاره ما تقرر في الصحابة من كراهة التسرع في حفظ القرآن دون التفقه فيه"

And indeed the sahaba took the stance of condemnation on rushing to memorize the Qur'an without knowing it's meanings

Also al-Abbas Ibn Raslan ash-Shafi'i in Sharh Sunan Abi Dawud:

ووجه إنكاره : ما تقرر في الصحابة من كراهة الشرع حفظ القرآن دون التفقه فيه

Also Umar Ibn al-Khattab feared that this would become a thing:

وقال الإمام مالك : «كُتب إلى عمر بن الخطاب من العراق ، يخبرونه أن رجالا قد جمعوا كتاب الله [أي : حفظوه] ، فكتب لهم عمر : أن افرض لهم في الديوان وأعطهم . قال: فكثر من يطلب القرآن ، فكتب إليه من قابل : إنه قد جمع القرآن سبعمائة رجل . قال عمر : إني لأخشى أن يُسرعوا في القرآن ، قبل أن يتفقهوا في الدين ، فكتب أن دعهم لا تعطهم شيئا»

Examples of scholars condemning it are endless.
