I recently have heard that things like music and drawing can be haram. However, I don't fully understand.
Music
When I first learned that music was haram, I had a bit of doubt. I thought that "Ok, maybe music with bad lyrics or something like that is haram" But as I learned more I started to realize that pretty much all music is haram. There's an ayat in the Quran for this. And there's some hadith about this too. Also, I think music becoming more common was a prediction than our Prophet(saw) made.
However is all music really haram? In a lot of the educational videos with scholars and such that I have watched, they say that music is haram because it can lead them to harmful things. And this is not wrong. Music and be manipulative and it can dominate people's minds. It may lead to haram things like alcohol, sexual intercourse, crime, dancing, gambling, dancing in public and other bad stuff. It not surprising how effective it is on people's brains.
However, what about music that doesn't have lyrics? Just melodies that you listen to relax or have on the background when you watching a program or playing a video game or when studying or when you go to a mall or something. That isn't being talked all that much. I usually never actively listen to music. I don't have a Spotify list or anything that sorts. I never just sit in bad and listen music from my phone. Sometimes soundtracks. Some people say that "innocent" music is also haram becomes it engages your mind and takes you away from the remembrance of Allah. However, I feel like that logic seems a bit flawed. When you think about it, most things you do engage your mind and you have to focus on it. Like studying, working, listening to a lesson in school.... you name it. Are these also haram? Some people also say than when they quit listening to music things like nasheed and Quran recitations start to sound more beautiful. Now if you want you can just listen to these in your free time instead of music. There's no problem with that and it's also good if you do that. But the problem is that these don't fit everything. Imagine watching a cooking program or playing a video game and listening to a soundtrack or you go to a shop. And instead of normal music, there's just Quran recitation. I don't want to be disrespectful or anything but that just seems kinda weird to me. It doesn't go well with everything.
Drawing
From what I have learned drawing living beings or things that have a soul is haram. While drawing inanimate beings or soulless things is ok.
But why? There's an authentic hadith that says that making images is a very big sin. There's an ayat about this also. However, some other hadiths say that this only goes for living things. Sources say that it is haram because you are imitating Allah's creation and you are going to be told to give life to things you made in the day of judgment. Since you obviously won't be able to, You'll go to hell.
But I don't understand. Most artists and painters nowadays obviously know that they can't compete with Allah when it comes to creation. Allah's the best creator after all. They also know that they can't give life to pictures depicting alive beings. They know it's all imaginary. It's just for aesthetic and creative purposes. Maybe as a way of expression. So why are treated as if they assume and believe such bad things?
Also with that logic, you can say that drawing inanimate things is also haram because aren't those also creations of Allah? Just saying.
