Narrated Abu Ayyub: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: "If someone separates a mother from her child, then Allah will separate between him and his beloved on the Day of Judgement." [Tirmidhi]

Imam Tirmidhi said: This hadith has some strangeness [in its chain], but it is sound. This is acted upon according to the people of knowledge and wisdom among the Companions of the Prophet (ﷺ) and others. They all considered it reprehensible to separate the captives [of war]: the mother and her child, the son and the father, and brothers, etc. [Jami’ At-Tirmidhi]

The scholars also used this hadith and similar for divorce. The vast majority of scholars [the official opinion of all the four madhabs] opined that the custody of the child is given to the mother in the case of divorce [except in certain unusual cases]. But if the child is mature, the child gets to choose who keeps his/her custody. And there are details that the scholars may have differed upon.
