A friend of mine was recently diagnosed with esophageal cancer. He has decided to not seek chemo/treatment for it. He says that he really has nothing to live for. He is unemployed, unmarried and living with his parents in his late 20s. He says that the amount of money he will be wasting on the treatments (we live in the US) can be better put to use doing an umrah or Hajj before he dies. He is a fairly practicing brother, prays 5 times a day, fasts, participates in the mosque community, etc. but had some emotional and learning issues through university which really held him back from his full potential. I am not sure if it is depression, but he says that the cancer is a sign that there is nothing for him to accomplish in this life.

I know any sort of suicide is a sin in Islam, but is this really suicide? The people around him have been 50/50 on his decision. In all honesty, I kind of understand his situation in that we are in very similar stages of life. If, Allah forbid, I was diagnosed, I am pretty sure I would do the same thing. I am pretty torn about this.
