I had a debate with a non-Muslim ( Christian) on how Islam spread in it's early days. He firmly believes it spread by the sword. I know in reality Islam spread through peaceful interactions between peoples. Our nabi Muhammed ﷺ preached in Arabia and converted the people peacefully. Dawah and trade relations brought Islam to South East Asia, East Africa and other places. And as the fastest growing religion today, people from all over the world are becoming Muslims willingly. But after the death of our nabi Muhammed ﷺ the Sahaba launched invasions against the Byzantine Christians and Zoroastrians. They lead siege to Constantinople ( yes he called it that) twice and stopped pilgrimages to Jerusalem. He asked how did Islam justify this violence and how was it peaceful? I tried to explain to him that it was defensive, to protect the Muslim community, but to no avail. I think the modern Image of Islam has distorted their view on history. I don't know much about Christianity or how it spread so refrained from questioning his religion. I was left puzzled.
