Why The Quran Doesn’t Need To Mention Modern Trends To Be Relevant in Surah Yunus

I used to be told the Quran is timeless, meaning that it will always be relevant for all mankind till the end of time. I wondered at that statement and thought how come the Quran doesn’t actually mention the trends happening today? I felt like that is a lost opportunity, it would have definitely caught my attention better I thought.

It later dawned on me that the Quran is in fact much more relevant than “modern trends”. You see trends are meant to unite us in a way that they are essentially common interests that are highlighted for time or ideas that are in a temporal fashion. They are usually bold out there, new and interesting, but tied down with a timer that is bound to expire. They never stay on our minds forever, if they’re lucky they can become glorified memories like a famous quote of a hit song thirty years ago. Why would the Quran tackle fleeting topics like this? Allah places His emphasis on something higher, yet still unites us all, and I’d argue more than any conceivable hashtag too.

Allah speaks to us about the universality of our humanity. And with that, everyone is mentioned and so everyone relates. Including you.

If one were to ponder on the Quran, you would notice it’s not usually mentioning our favorite interests but it’s talking about what makes us human more than anything. This is the most profound commonality that the Quran taps into, and that’s how it happens to be that every page we open at random, we would always have an “Aha!” moment.

We are human beings, and we are universal in our emotions, our pains, and our ambitions. And so when our Master speaks, it’s impossible for one to feel left out, unlike a trend, which may not always include everyone.

Surah Yunus(10): Verse 57

Allah addresses all of humanity here. The Book has come. It’s really meant to be a decisive moment for mankind. This is what the verse feels like to me. The word مَوْعِظَةٌ or “instruction” that is used at the start connotes what I am trying to say here. It’s not just generic, it’s advice that is meant to penetrate you deep down inside in your heart. It’s so relevant and personal on an overwhelming level. This can only happen if the one speaking to you understands you so well and knows you so well. This is the type of relevance that Allah brings to the picture.

Naturally, once you feel heard, understood and loved you would take the advice and find healing within your very soul. We have much pain to endure, and we can’t always pretend that we don’t need relief. We are made this way, and it humbles us to never feel self-sufficient. There is no shame in seeking a cure. Exclusively, however, for believers who actually take this book upon themselves as the way to live, as a true system of “guidance”, they will always be able to find a special mercy reserved for them by Allah, and that is another gift in this verse.

With this being said, I hope it’s a little easier to appreciate what it means when we say the Quran is timeless, or universal. I hope we can all trust this Book more. In the materialistic climate today where we never fail to look at what's happening around us, the Quran comes to redirect us to be in touch with what lies within, our often forgotten human soul.

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُمْ مَوْعِظَةٌ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ
