Assalamu Alaykum,
I have read about the specific punishments in Jahannam. I have several questions about them.
-
What is the purpose of Jahannam to Allah (s.w.t.)? Why is it better to torment the sinners for eternity rather than erase them from existence? What does that achieve for Allah?
-
Why are the punishments so graphic and vivid? For example, the backbiter will be made to eat the flesh peeled from his own sides. They are so terrifying that a person may end up worshipping Allah only to avoid them and not because he loves Allah. Is there a reason they are so specific, and where does Allah's mercy link to this?
-
I heard that Allah surrounded Jahannam with desires after Jibril (a.s.) said that no one who hears about it will enter it, so Jibril said that he was afraid that no one would avoid Jahannam. Given that Allah has made Jahannam so scary, why would Allah make it so easy for us to gain this punishment. Again, what is the link to His mercy?

Surah 7:179 says:
And We have certainly created for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts with which they do not understand, they have eyes with which they do not see, and they have ears with which they do not hear. Those are like livestock; rather, they are more astray. It is they who are the heedless.
Does this mean that some of the Jinn and Men were created for the purpose of fuelling Jahannam? If so, why?
May Allah save us all from the Fire.
