Assalamu 'alaikum buddies. I hope it's OK to post this here;

A long time ago our community had a chat on IRC, namely #islam on Snoonet. Snoonet is an IRC server that is dedicated to serving Reddit communities, and I've been part of Islam IRC chats on various networks for over ten years, and I never found one better than the one on Snoonet, which I guess is now only very loosely affiliated with this sub.

The IRC chat has died down quite a bit, but thankfully a few of our original and most essential members have remained stubborn participants after all these years. Meanwhile, most chatters have moved to platforms like Discord, which offer some features and enhancements that IRC could not provide, or provides with great inconvenience.

It wouldn't make sense to ask people to go back to IRC, but this year I discovered a new platform called Matrix which is currently in development and offers advanced functionality beyond the limitations of IRC. I have also used Discord for many years, and after comparing Matrix to Discord I decided that Matrix is a much better platform for technological and practical reasons. Unfortunately, it's just not as popular. However, it seems well-positioned to replace Discord in the future, as some have recognized that the Discord company doesn't have a viable way of generating revenue and will eventually go bankrupt and close.

By contrast, Matrix is an open source technology (like IRC) and is therefore not exclusively owned by a single company or organization. Because of that we can be sure that the platform will live forever, just as other open source platforms have done.

What's even better is that Matrix is backwards compatible with IRC, which means that you can participate in popular and well-established IRC chats when you are logged into Matrix. You can access them conveniently from your browser or smartphone and not miss any messages. It keeps you joined to the channel when you are offline or away.

Over the past few months I've taken great care to configure and establish chats and bridging on Matrix in order to serve our communities. In particular, we have bridged the #islam:converser.eu chat room with #islam on Snoonet, with the great result that now we are the largest and most active Islam chat on Matrix, and our chat includes both the original community members and original mods of the Snoonet IRC channel, who are great people.

We would love to add new and sincere members to our small group. If you are already an IRC user and prefer to stay that way, you can join #islam on Snoonet. To use the new Matrix platform which I recommend especially to those who don't know how to use IRC, you can use the Riot chat client available at riot.im for the browser and smartphone. Once you are logged in, join #islam:converser.eu directly or search "Islam" in the matrix.org room directory and we will be the top result.

Additionally, you are invited to join #uyghur:matrix.org which belongs to our sub /r/Uyghur for those who are interested in Uyghur people and culture. It's not as popular as the Islam chat, but we are badly in need of members and supporters, and I'm always there to respond to new participants. I'm always glad to see the concern that /r/Islam has for Uyghurs as well as all the other oppressed peoples of the world.

Please do not be a stranger!

Wassalam
