Muslims who grow up in Muslim minority countries, how does it feel growing up surrounded by the foods you can't eat?

For the past few years I've been living in Japan. When I visited some local festival, I was slightly disappointed with the lack of festival food I could eat there even with my not the strictest adherence of halal food. Then I thought it must be really awful as a kid going to festival but cannot enjoy the foods around. So I just wonder how did you feel as a kid with this kind of food restriction and how did your family deal with this issue in general.
