does calamity come on families because of the sins from the parents and grand parents?

in south asian muslim families I hear that a lot of issues happening in the family is because of past sins. But in islam we are taught that every soul shall answer for it's deeds so why does the sins and deeds of the forefathers matter?

im asking because i know a religious family going through problem after problem and the topic of past sins came up. Like how their forefathers were into a certain sin or something like that. I dont know how that makes much sense but would love to heat your thoughts.
