Hi everyone,

I've been trying to study and learn about Islam for a while now in an attempt to learn more about a more religious way of thinking. I tend to agree with many basic principles of Islam. Most of them I feel are self-evident and things the average person follows naturally, and I agree with many ideals more so than current Western ideals (modesty, sex, charity, etc.).

My struggle is just with the fact that Muslims seems to get their interpretations of the Qur'an mainly through scholars. This process seems to avoid a personal connection to the Qur'an by skipping the step of personal interpretation while simultaneously not removing the element of choice in interpretation from the equation, since you need to still choose which scholar you agree with. While I can see the validity in using their opinions as a starting point for understanding and studying, it instead seems to be the ending of Qur'anic analysis and the beginning of blindly following rules you haven't fully considered. The reason this is causing so many difficulties for me is because I find it difficult to actually understand what the beliefs of Muslims are, outside of the foundational concepts such as God being one, hajj, charity, etc.

Feel free to tell me where I'm wrong and/or things I do not know. I'm still very much trying to learn, this is just a common thread I've noticed that I haven't been able to understand.

Thanks!
