How did Malcolm X shape Islam in the western world for better or for worse? Is Elijah Muhammad venerated among Muslims or are his teachings and practices condemned?

I am reading the biography of Malcolm X and I have so many questions. I was interested in learning about Islam and the struggles Muslims endured before 9/11, except the world hadn’t known about Islam much in that time period. As I am reading the text, it is so eye opening but I also raised my eyebrows on a few concepts.

Anyways my question is how did Malcolm X change or shape how we view Islam today in the western world. How did Elijah Muhammad play a role in this?
