Our neighbors are "celebrating" ashura and would like to give them a gift that says "enjoy your holiday and you belong". I use quotations because I believe they're Shia and are mourning and not actually "celebrating".
I come from a western background and my wife comes from a Jewish and western background but we don't consider ourselves religious. I did some researching on ashura and it doesn't seem like a gift giving holiday so am hesitant of giving them a gift during this period.
Otherwise we thought about giving them some sweets during Halloween but through some research I found that could be taboo. So I don't really know the best way to present from a western or Islamic standpoint.
I would like to give them a gift to be friendly, can you help provide ideas and appropriate times to do it?
