"Allah hath set a seal on their hearts and on their hearing, and on their eyes is a veil; great is the penalty they (incur)." - Quran 2:7

"In their hearts is a disease; and Allah has increased their disease: And grievous is the penalty they (incur), because they are false (to themselves)." - Quran 2:10

A couple years back I decided to read the Quran, but didn't make it too far, but these two verses stuck with me for some reason.

I kept asking myself, why would God do this? I was raised a christian, and that did not sound like the god of the gospel to me. I couldn't reconcile these with gospel teachings like loving your enemies and turning the other cheek.

Why would an all-merciful all-forgiving god do something that would keep unbelievers from accepting the truth and finding the right path?

I tried to look up commentary and Tafsirs online, but all of them either used a lengthier way of expressing the verse instead of answering the question, or tried to say that it is not God but the unbelievers' ignorance that causes this when the verse clearly says God does this.
