Among Jewish communities throughout history, despite vast geographical distances, Hebrew was the common language all communities knew. So, for instance, a Jew from Syria could travel to Russia and converse with Jews there in basic Hebrew.

Has Arabic played a similar role for Muslim communities worldwide? For example, could a Malaysian Muslim who knows basic Arabic from madrassah go to Syria and hold very basic conversations in old Arabic?

Also, are scholarly works generally written in Arabic, even if the author isn’t a native Arab speaker?
