Iyas ibn Abdullah رضي الله عنه reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

“Many women have come to the family of Muhammad complaining about their husbands hitting them. These men are not the best among you.” — Sunan Dawud 2128

Unfortunately some have fallen into the tricks of the kuffar and falsely believe the Prophet ﷺ hit Aisha in one narration. The kuffar took the word lahaza and translated it to beating.

Aisha رضي الله عنها said in a narration “He (the Prophet ﷺ) hit me on my chest”

The true translation of lahaza is a jab or push, so the real translation is: “He pushed me firmly on my chest”. This was something the Prophet ﷺ did to many of companions whenever he wanted to tell them something important. The jab in the chest would “wake” them up.

Abu Dharr رضي الله عنه

The Prophet struck my chest with his hand and he said… — Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 1825

Narrated Jarir رضي الله عنه: “... He (the Prophet ﷺ) struck me on the chest with his hand and said, "O Allah! Make him firm and make him a guiding and a rightly guided man." Bukhari 3035

After the Prophet did a slight jab (lahaza) to Aisha رضي الله عنها, he taught her this supplication:

“May Allah have mercy on those who have gone ahead of us and those who will come later. If Allah wills, we will join them.” — Sunan al-Nasā’ī
